Sugar Glider Sugar Bear Nail Care 4

Sugar glider sugar bears are also called as sugar glider sugar bears because in the wild, they glide from one tree to another tree. Therefore for survival they need to grasp on to their surroundings, and hence have a fear of falling that comes as an instinct for its survival. They do this through their claws. This is the reason why you should not really clip off the nails of your sugar glider sugar bear. Instead you should just file the nails to the level where they can still grip and grasp things and also they don’t really hurt your skin when you pick them up and play with your little pets. This filing of nails can be done in two ways. You can either use an abrasive insert that can be fit into the exercise wheel of your sugar glider sugar bear or you can just follow the more traditional route of filing by your hand.

Most pet owners prefer to follow the first use because it is so simple to perform and also due to its effectiveness in getting the filing just right. If you want to follow this route, first you should make sure that you do not use just any type of exercise wheel for your sugar glider sugar bear. The reason for this is that sugar glider sugar bears have a longer tail and thus the traditional hamster type wheels are inappropriate for these pets since their tails can get caught in the wheel.

Instead you should go in for a specialized wheel that is made especially for sugar glider sugar bears, such as Run-o-Round from a company Pocket Pets that also comes with a removable abrasive insert to file the nails of your pet that is highly effective and efficient. To use it, you can put the insert in the exercise wheel when you sleep at night and by morning the filing should be finished. You will need to make sure that the insert is removed, first thing in the morning. The traditional method of filing by hand can also be quite effective. You will need one person to hold your sugar glider sugar bear while the other swipes the file 3-5 times in a backward motion to complete the filing. With practice you will get the right amount of filing, but initially you can file a little too much, but don’t worry  as the nails of a sugar glider sugar bear grow back quick.
