Sugar glider sugar bears are prone to accidental death due to dehydration or due to toxicity poisoning, the two most common causes of death. These can be avoided by following a few simple steps. You should have a water source inside the cage of your pet to complement the fluid intake of the sugar glider sugar bear through fresh fruits, such as apples. Ideally, it should be a drip water bottle, but for younger sugar glider sugar bears, you should have a small shallow bowl because they may not be used to drinking from the drip bottle.
Teaching a sugar glider sugar bear to drink from the bottle is easy, however. All you need to do is gently bump its nose against the tube end whenever you put your sugar glider sugar bear back into the cage. You can also put some blueberry yogurt to the end to make this more effective. Being intelligent animals, they will pick this up very quickly. To prepare the fluid in the bottle, add Gatorade or Pedialyte to an equal quantity of water. It is likely that your sugar glider sugar bear will like citrus flavor the most, but you can try out different flavors to know your pet’s favorite. If your sugar glider sugar bear doesn’t like any, use apple juice instead, with equal proportion of water. These fluids will taste sweet to your sugar glider sugar bear but more importantly they help to keep your pet completely hydrated at all times. With time, you should reduce the ratio of Gatorade or juice till your pet is comfortable drinking plain water.
Remember that tap water can be very dangerous for your sugar glider sugar bear due to the spike in chemicals and hence should never be used. Instead use bottled or spring water that is available cheaply. You can also use filtered but make sure that the filters are replaced regularly.
